About the educator

Herman Kariev is a Ukrainian hairdresser working in Prague, at the Kamikiri studio in Letná. He started out as a barber, but soon realized he was more drawn to longer shapes and creative work, and moved into hairdressing. He's been cutting hair for two years, and in that time he's built his own visual language: texture, long layers, bold shapes, and unexpected forms. He works on both women's and men's hair, and at the salon he also does short haircuts, fades, and beards. He pays the most attention to disconnections and playing with hair weight, building the haircut around how the hair naturally falls and moves. He believes a strong haircut comes from understanding structure and making intentional decisions, not from following rules for their own sake. He treats the consultation as the starting point of the entire haircut. In his teaching, he shares techniques he's developed behind the chair, and encourages other hairdressers to find their own approach to cutting instead of replicating familiar patterns.

He runs through the haircut calmly and step by step, naming every section and every angle. He explains why he's doing something, not just how, and keeps coming back to cross-checking and clean partings as the things that hold everything else together.

What you will learn

  1. 01

Three disconnections in the back of the head

You'll learn his division of the back into lower, middle, and upper zones, which keeps texture and shape working together.

  2. 02

Cutting at an angle greater than 90 degrees

You'll learn how to remove volume without shortening length, building layers this way.

  3. 03

    Face frame and line-up

You'll find out how to pull hair into the last section to lengthen the face frame, and how to finish it off with a razor.

  4. 04

Top cut in a triangle shape

You'll understand why he leaves weight on top and how he positions the fringe relative to the top zone.

  5. 05

    Texture and personalizing

You'll master pinch texturizing on damp hair, and learn how to match the finish to specific hair and to the individual.
