The Dynamic Crop-Mullet Hybrid is a modern men’s haircut for clients who are in the process of growing out the back and are saying, “I’m bored with my short haircut.” This course shows how to use this transitional phase to create a complete, deliberate style that looks good right now, rather than just waiting for the hair to reach its target length. The key is contrast—a sharp taper on the sides that visually elongates and highlights the growing back.
Vadim Futowsky walks you through the entire process of blending two styles: a short, precise taper fade on the sides with a longer, relaxed style on the back and top. You’ll learn how to plan a haircut around the client’s goal (growing out a mullet) and how to use geometry to control the process. Vadim demonstrates step by step how to create a triangular section on the side to seamlessly blend the taper with the length at the back without any disconnection, and then how to cut the top into a triangle to achieve the illusion of a strong square shape in the final style.
In this course, you'll learn:
- Creating a taper fade from scratch as an element that contrasts with and visually elongates the back of the hairstyle
- Work on the back of the occipital bone—combining a square shape in one perspective and a rounded shape in the other to build volume
- A key joining technique—constructing a triangular section on the sides to seamlessly connect the taper to the length at the back without any discontinuity
- Cutting the top into a triangle (shorter in the middle, longer at the sides) as a way to create the illusion of a square silhouette on a round head
- Use a blade to cut the bangs, creating a soft, uneven texture that the client can easily style in different directions
- Trimming the back with a Chinese razor instead of clippers – why this creates a more natural and soft look as hair grows out
- A complete styling routine using a diffuser and styling paste to enhance the natural waves and the final shape of the hairstyle
After watching this course, you’ll stop viewing a client’s grow-out phase as a “transitional period” and start using it as an opportunity to create a bold, dynamic hairstyle. You’ll learn to consciously use geometry—triangles and squares—to build shapes that not only look good but also solve specific problems, such as blending extreme lengths or working with a round head shape.

Hairstyle Plan - Contrast and Taper
"To make the back look longer, we need to taper it here, meaning a smooth transition from zero."
Creating a square in the rear section
"So if I'm creating a square, then I'll merge everything into the previous track."
Connecting the back to the side – the triangle technique
"So from this perspective, if you look down from above, I'll make a triangle."
Cutting bangs with scissors for texture
"I'll trim the bangs with a razor to create the softest possible texture right away."
Why a triangle makes a better square
"It works very well for creating a distinct, square shape on heavily rounded heads."
Marking the high line of a taper fade
"I need to taper a little higher than usual, so the guideline will be somewhere around here."
Smoothing the transition with a razor without a guard
"I want to gently lift the hair here to soften the transition. Without a clip."
Creating a soft contour on the back of the neck
"I lift this section of hair and cut underneath it. That leaves a nice, soft outline."
