Shag Cut
The creator of the YES concept. With over 40 years of experience in hairdressing and more than 20 years of teaching experience, Kamil Cesarski teaches a methodical approach to hairdressing, based on form, proportion, and decisions made at the chair—without shortcuts or randomness.
The result and the process
The Shag Cut is a men’s hairstyle for wavy and curly hair that combines a commercial look with an artistic touch, offering clients a wide range of styling options. This course demonstrates how to create a strong, square shape that emphasizes masculine features while remaining easy to style on a daily basis and making the most of the hair’s natural texture without excessive thinning.
Kamil Cesarski guides you through the entire process of creating a shag cut, starting with his proprietary method of planning the cut using “safety buffers”—sections of hair that are intentionally left longer as a reserve. He demonstrates how to precisely section the hair, determine the length on the memory strand, and then cut the entire head horizontally and vertically in a square pattern, redirecting successive strands in a controlled manner. The process concludes with finishing the outline using a Chinese razor and styling with a diffuser.
In this course, you'll learn:
- A proprietary method of working with "safety buffers" as a deliberate reserve of length above the ears and at the back of the head
- Horizontal and vertical cutting within a square, with precise redirection of successive strands to the memory section
- Use a Chinese knife to shape the outline of the hairstyle—make short strokes with the blade to trim the length without creating excessive texture
- Using a grooming spray to control hair separation and tension during a wet haircut
- Finish styling with a diffuser on low speed and medium heat to bring out the natural curl as much as possible without touching it with your hands
- Why does curly hair respond well to a straight, clean cut, while split ends disrupt its natural structure?
After this course, you’ll be able to confidently plan haircuts for curly and wavy hair, using safety margins to ensure full control over the final shape. You’ll learn how to create a masculine, square silhouette that’s both commercially viable and easy for the client to style, basing the entire cut on natural texture and a strong, clean cut.
What's inside
Full access to the course
The concept of safety buffers
"We will create what are known as length buffers, or safety buffers."
Change in direction when the head turns
"We're no longer redirecting calls to the previous number; instead, we're redirecting practically all calls to number three."
Checking the tension on the outer part of the fingers
"I press the outer part against the outer part of my fingers because that gives me better control over the tension."
Finishing the outline with a Chinese knife
"We'll use a Chinese razor to create the entire outline of the haircut with these subtle nuances."
Applying the cream before drying
"Don't apply the cream at the roots—just on the lengths and ends."
Techniques for working with a diffuser
"Don't run your hands through your hair; just let it dry as naturally as possible."
Analysis and use of the previous hairstyle
"You have to make the most of it and think about what your hair used to look like, what the hairdresser did."
The rule of straight cutting for curly hair
"Remember that curly hair looks best with a simple cut. The look really comes together when finished with a bold touch."
