The entire Dyson Professional line through the eyes of a hairdresser

Over several years of salon work and live shows, I've put the brand's entire professional line through its paces: hair dryers, straightener, attachments, and accessories. Below I share concrete insights from everyday work — what really makes a difference behind the chair, and what's just a nice-to-have.
I'm not sugarcoating anything. Every device has its strengths and limitations, so I describe them in a way that helps you make an informed purchasing decision and choose equipment suited to your specific work mode: a fixed salon, mobile work, or traveling to courses.

Dyson Professional hairdressing accessories
We associate the Dyson brand with hair dryers, but in the professional line, accessories matter just as much. They determine how smoothly work flows behind the chair: station organization, hair sectioning, and access to tools without bending down or hunting around. From my experience, it's exactly these "little things" that save the most time throughout the day.
Accessory storage bag
I have an obsessive approach to equipment, and I've lost quite a few tools in my life due to poor storage. The professional Dyson bag for brushes and accessories is a bullseye for me:
"I am obsessed with equipment, so I have lost many tools due to poor storage. That's why this bag surprised me a little, but also made me very happy."
This isn't just a case — it's an organization system with dedicated slots for individual brushes and attachments. Every tool has its own spot, so during work you reach for the right brush without rummaging through a drawer. For mobile work and shows, this is an extra plus: packing and unpacking your station takes just a moment.
Professional hairdressing clips
The set includes strong clips that I really appreciate for sectioning and working with long hair:
"These clips are very strong, especially if you are working with long hair and want, for example, a client to move from the wash basin to the styling station. They are a great thing."
A good clip is the foundation of clean sectioning. If it slips halfway through a haircut, you lose the line you set and have to divide the hair all over again. Three things convince me about these clips:
- Rubberized elements that hold even fine, slippery hair without leaving a crease in the section
- A durable, metal construction that doesn't crack after a few uses like cheap plastics
- A wide span that lets you clip a large section of hair and expose the zone you're working on
A strong grip is also a matter of client comfort when transitioning from the wash basin to the chair: sections stay stable, and nothing spills over the shoulders.
Professional comb
The Dyson line also includes a wide-tooth comb, which I treat as a tool for detangling and controlling the section:
"This is technologically very advanced and interesting equipment. That's why I want to show it to you, because not everyone has access to such equipment, and sometimes it's worth investing in and minimalistically organizing your hairdressing or barber station."
The wide tooth spacing makes this a comb for detangling and guiding wet hair before drying, as well as for evenly distributing product through the length. After several months of use, I appreciate:
- Perfectly polished teeth that glide smoothly through thick hair without catching on tangles
- An ergonomic handle that doesn't tire the hand even during prolonged work
- Performance on both dry and wet hair, without static
Professional brushes
In my daily arsenal, I have Dyson brushes in three sizes. Each size has its own job: the larger round ones build volume at the root and set direction, while the smaller one refines details and shorter sections.
"I even use the smallest brush as a beard roller, and it works great on longer facial hair. It has a strong grip, pulls hair out very effectively, and it just works."
What also sets them apart is the bristle construction:
"It's such a modern technology that it's not a wire brush, it's just a material that's rounded at the end, which is very gentle on the hair and scalp."
The rounded plastic tips don't scratch the scalp under heavy tension on the section, while still providing the grip needed to straighten and shape the hair with hot air. The set includes:
- A flat cushion brush — withstanding temperatures up to 150°C, for detangling and initial smoothing of length
- Round brushes, 45mm and 35mm — for building volume at the root and styling (larger diameter = softer wave, smaller = tighter curl)
- A smaller brush — for shorter sections and beard styling
Mirror holder
The magnetic holder mounted on the mirror deserves a separate mention:
"For example, this is also an original Dyson product, which means that we get three magnets and a dryer holder in the package, and you can hang your dryer in this way."
This unassuming gadget tidies up the station, especially in smaller spaces. The dryer hangs within arm's reach, the countertop stays clear, and you don't set down hot equipment on furniture between one section and the next.
Dyson Corrale Professional — a straightener in a new edition
I initially approached the cordless Dyson straightener with skepticism. Battery-powered hairdressing equipment usually loses power halfway through work and doesn't maintain a stable temperature. The Corrale Professional version really surprised me.
What sets Corrale Professional apart?
The most important feature is the flexing plates that wrap around the section from both sides:
"It has movable plates and is very gentle on the hair. Compared to other straighteners, it reduces hair damage by more than fifty percent."
In a regular straightener, rigid plates let part of the hair slip out to the sides, so those sections get pressed harder than needed. Flexing plates adjust to the thickness of the section and distribute pressure evenly, letting you straighten the entire section in one pass without overheating individual hairs. The control panel is simple: three temperature settings (165°C, 185°C, and 210°C) cover work with every hair type. Use the lower one on fine, damaged hair and the higher one on thick, resistant hair.
Airplane mode — a feature for traveling hairdressers
For me, the game-changer is airplane mode:
"They won't let you board a plane with a normal hair straightener. But you can take a Dyson hair straightener with you because it has an airplane mode. Just turn this element and you can travel with it in your carry-on luggage."
I travel to shows and courses often. Previously, straighteners went into checked baggage and quite often came back damaged. Now Corrale flies with me in my carry-on (the exception is flights to Japan, where different regulations apply for lithium batteries).
Who is Corrale Professional for?
I'll be honest: Corrale won't fully replace a traditional straightener in intensive salon work.
"I work faster in the salon with a traditional straightener. Corrale doesn't straighten hair as perfectly as a classic straightener—it's a compromise between the convenience of cordless operation and the end result."
A corded straightener holds a constant temperature endlessly, while Corrale, like any battery-powered device, is a compromise here. But in exchange, the lack of a cord gives you freedom of movement around the head that corded equipment can't offer. That's why it works best:
- For mobile hairdressers working at clients' homes without access to an outlet
- As a tool for touch-ups and finishing (e.g., smoothing individual sections after styling)
- For travel and on-location work
- As a complement to your main salon equipment
Dyson Supersonic Professional — the evolution of a classic
I've known the Supersonic for years and use it daily. The Professional version has gone through many small but significant updates over that time.
Technology that really works
The Supersonic has always stood out for its precise temperature measurements:
"Supersonic measures air temperature forty times per second and continuously regulates it. This counteracts thermal damage to the hair and helps protect its appearance and shine."
This matters during brush styling, when the airflow focuses on one section for an extended time. Constant temperature control protects the hair from heat spikes that dry out and dull the section. The ionization function completes the effect: it seals the cuticle, reduces frizz, and adds shine — most visible on fine hair prone to static.
New attachments — evolution in practice
The latest version of Supersonic Professional introduces two attachments that expand the dryer's capabilities:
- Straightening attachment — a rotating design that works similarly to a straightener, but using only air: "It's recommended for frizzy hair. It makes detangling with a wide comb easier, helps pull the hair out, and adds volume."
- Detangling attachment — for smoothing unruly hair: "The hair ends up very shiny, smoothed, using only air."
In practice, these two attachments let you smooth and straighten a section with air alone, without reaching for heated plates. This is a gentler solution for damaged hair and a convenient way to finish quickly without another device on your station.
Filter system in the Professional version
In the Professional version, I especially value the magnetic filter system with an extra filter included:
"The set always includes two filters. This is an extremely practical solution for when one filter gets dirty."
In the salon, a filter quickly clogs with hair particles and hairspray, and a clogged filter lowers airflow power and raises the motor's temperature. The second filter in the set lets you swap it in a few seconds and keep working, without a mid-day break for cleaning.
Settings and control
Supersonic Professional gives precise control over power and temperature:
- Three power levels: fast drying, standard drying, and styling (the lowest, focused airflow for precise brush work)
- Four temperature levels:
- No backlight: 28°C (cool air, to set the hairstyle at the end)
- One dot: 60°C (gentle drying)
- Two dots: 80°C (standard drying)
- Three dots: 100°C (intensive drying)
In practice, I rarely use the highest level (100°C), because it's really hot. The pattern that works for me: first, strong airflow and higher temperature for initial drying, then lower temperature for brush styling, and finish with a burst of cool air that seals the cuticle and sets the shape.
Dyson Supersonic R — a revolution in form
I'll be honest: the first photos of Supersonic R didn't convince me. The tube-like shape seemed impractical.
"This hair dryer didn't win me over when I looked at it on social media... But on closer inspection, meaning simply picking it up, it's hard to put down afterward. That's just a fact."
After first use, I changed my mind. The balance and the way the device sits in the hand are a real step forward during long work sessions.
Smart attachments
What changed my approach the most was the smart attachment system:
"Supersonic R has this marker on each attachment. It's a chip that simply adjusts the temperature to that particular type of drying."
The dryer automatically selects settings for the attached tool:
"Watch this, without touching any buttons. Here it was on maximum drying and maximum temperature, and now with the styling attachment, it automatically switches to minimum temperature and maximum drying."
If you modify these settings, the dryer remembers them for that specific attachment. Behind the chair, this means less touching the panel during work: you swap the attachment, and the device automatically returns to the settings you prefer for that task.
Streamline heating technology
Supersonic R heats air differently than classic hair dryers:
"In every conventional hair dryer, the middle part is cold, and only warm air flows along the sides. In Supersonic R, you have a heating surface — ten plates positioned along the curve of the device, through which the air flows. This means all the air is evenly warm."
The technology, called Streamline, delivers an evenly warm airflow across the entire cross-section, not just along the sides. Drying goes faster, and the difference is most noticeable on thick, dense hair, where a regular hair dryer requires more passes to dry the center of the section.
Smaller, lighter, more comfortable
Supersonic R is:
- 30% smaller than the classic Supersonic
- 20% lighter
- Finished with a satin, matte texture, which improves grip even with a damp hand
When you're drying hair for many hours a day, the lower weight and better balance genuinely reduce wrist strain by the end of the day.
Improved diffuser
Separately, it's worth noting the redesigned diffuser:
"Compared to other hair dryers, this diffuser works the way a real diffuser should — it heats up very intensely and gives off a lot of heat, but with a very gentle airflow. This means the hair really isn't frizzy, but is instead very substantial and full of volume."
The secret to good curl drying is a lot of heat with gentle airflow: strong airflow breaks up the curl and causes frizz. This diffuser keeps the curl springy and defines it instead of blowing it apart, so on curly hair it delivers a noticeably better result than standard diffusers.
Hair dryer comparison: Supersonic Professional vs. Supersonic R
After months of working with both models, I can compare them fairly.
Motor and performance
- Motor: "The speed of both hair dryers is the same. Both Supersonic and Supersonic R have a V9 motor with 110,000 rotations per minute."
- Cord: Both Professional versions have a long, 4.5-meter cord, giving freedom of movement around the chair
- Reliability: "My Dyson has never broken down. We have three of these hair dryers from different model years, and they all work flawlessly."
Key differences
- Heating technology:
- Supersonic Professional: classic heating system
- Supersonic R: ten Streamline heating plates, evenly warm airflow
- Attachments:
- Supersonic Professional: standard magnetic attachments
- Supersonic R: smart attachments with a chip, automatically selecting settings
- Diffuser:
- Supersonic Professional: standard diffuser
- Supersonic R: redesigned diffuser, better for curly hair
- Weight and size:
- Supersonic R is 30% smaller and 20% lighter
The motor and performance are shared, so the choice comes down to attachments, diffuser, and ergonomics. If you work extensively with curly hair or are looking for lighter equipment for all-day use, the R wins out. If you value a proven shape and intuitive operation for a team, the Professional falls short in nothing.
Important information for hairdressers
Many fellow professionals ask whether the Supersonic R will replace the previous model. No:
"Important information — it's not that one model replaces the other. They are both manufactured in parallel. As far as I know, Dyson has no plans to discontinue either of these hair dryers."
This is good news both for fans of the classic shape and for those open to new things: by buying the Professional, you're not buying "older" equipment — you're getting a current model still manufactured alongside the R.
Practical tips from daily work
Over years of using Dyson equipment, I've developed a few habits that may be useful to other professionals.
My system for taking care of dryer filters
This method works well for me in intensive salon work:
"I take out the filter, clean the hair off it, and put it in soapy water, exactly like with a vacuum cleaner — that's my own trick, not Dyson's. I put in the second filter and keep working. At the end of the day, I take that filter out of the soapy water, dry it, and set it aside to air-dry. It's important to never insert a wet filter!"
The most important rule: never insert a wet filter. A damp filter restricts airflow, strains the motor, and can draw moisture inside. Rotating two filters (one working, one drying) maintains full airflow power throughout the day.
Optimal temperature selection
I reserve the highest temperature (100°C) for initial, fast drying of very wet, dense hair. For styling and finishing, I switch to lower settings that are safer for the hair's structure, and the cool burst at the end sets the hairstyle and adds shine. The finer and more damaged the hair, the lower you should keep the temperature.
Station organization
Professionalism is also about order at your station:
"I like to keep my equipment organized. Anyone who knows me, who's seen me at courses, knows that I always keep my equipment reasonably tidy, and I care about this a lot."
Magnetic mirror holders keep the dryer within arm's reach and free up the countertop. Less reaching and setting down means smoother work and less risk of dropping hot equipment during a service.
Equipment on the go
For hairdressers who travel a lot, the straightener's airplane mode matters:
"They won't let you board a plane with a normal hair straightener. But with airplane mode activated, you can take the Dyson straightener as carry-on luggage."
This is a major advantage if you regularly fly to shows, competitions, and courses, because the equipment stays with you instead of in checked baggage.
Summary: which hair dryer is right for you
After several years of intensive use, I have my own preferences, but I try to look at this objectively:
"Of course, I prefer working with the R version. But that's just my own experience."
Supersonic Professional will be ideal for:
- Hairdressers who value a classic, proven form
- Salons where multiple people use the equipment (intuitive, simple operation)
- Styling that requires very precise control over power and temperature
- People with smaller hands, for whom the R model may feel too bulky
Supersonic R is designed for:
- Hairdressers working with different hair types (thanks to smart attachments)
- Curly hair specialists (improved diffuser)
- Those who value innovation and the latest technology
- Hairdressers working many hours a day (lighter, better-balanced design)
Most importantly, both models are developed in parallel:
"If someone buys the Dyson Professional because they like it, they want it, it's cheaper, whatever the reason — maybe it fits the salon decor — they'll be satisfied too. That doesn't mean they'll have an 'old' Dyson; they'll still have a current Dyson, just the Dyson Professional Supersonic instead of the Supersonic R."
My final opinion
Dyson Professional products are a solid investment for a hairdresser. They're more expensive than standard devices, but their durability, temperature control protecting the hair's structure, and all-day working comfort mean that in an intensive salon, this expense pays for itself. The choice between the Professional and the R isn't a choice between "older" and "newer" — it's about matching the shape, diffuser, and attachments to how and with what kind of hair you work day to day.
